الأصوليّات والإعلام والماكّارثية الجديدة: تهديدات لحوار الحضارات في الولايات المتحدة (*)

"يسعى الإيمان بأشكاله إلى هدف واحد: الحرب على من نصّب نفسه إلهًا على الأرض وعلى الطّغاة ومساندة المضطهدين وضحايا سوء المعاملة، وهما وجهان لواقع واحد. حقّق الإيمان الانتصار وأصبح المضطهدون منتصرين فقط ليصابوا بصدمة عند رؤيتهم أنّ الطّغاة قد حكموا باسم الإيمان. وهذا من شأنه أن يزيد الفوضى بين المضطهدين ويوسّع الهوة، ممّا يطلق فوضى الأديان. والواقع أنّه عندما تتعرّض المصالح للخطر تظهر الاختلافات".

ما إن علمنا زوجي وأنا باصطدام الطائرات بالبرجين في مانهاتن والبنتاغون في واشنطن في العام الماضي حتى شعرنا بخوف يجتاحنا. وقال زوجي "ليكن الله في عوننا إن كان المسبِّب من الشرق الأوسط". وبعد أكثر من سنة، ما زلنا قلقين بشأن ترتّبات أحداث 11 أيلول (سبتمبر) المأساوية ونتائجها على الشرق الأوسط، وعلى الدين الإسلامي النبيل – وهو دين العدالة والرحمة، وعلى أصدقائنا وعائلتنا في لبنان وفلسطين وفي أماكن أخرى، وكذلك على أصدقائنا وزملائنا من أميركيين عرب ومسلمين في الولايات المتحدة.
خضع حوار الحضارات – الإسلامية والمسيحية، العربية والأميركية – لاختبارات صارمة خلال السنة الماضية واعتبر في الغالب ضعيفًا وهشًّا مع أن الزّعماء المسلمين عبر الولايات المتحدة سارعوا إلى إدانة اعتداءات 11 أيلول، ورغم دعوات الرئيس بوش الدقيقة والمسؤولة إلى جميع الأميركيين ألاّ يسيئوا الحكم على جيرانهم المسلمين بعد الاعتداءات. وفي الأشهر الستّة الماضية اعتبر الرئيس بوش وكثيرون من مستشاريه المقرّبين أكثر فأكثر اقترابًا من الصهاينة الأصوليين المسيحيين واتفاقًا معهم. وربما صمت واشنطن حيال هذه التجاوزات لهذه الكتلة الناخبة (التي تتّسم بالاتهامات التي وجّهها القس بات روبرتسون والقس جيري فالوِل بأنّ النبي محمد (صلعم) كان "الإرهابي الأصليّ"، وأنّ الإسلام هو دين الحقد والعنف) ناجم عن الضرورات السياسية التي يفترضها عام انتخابات أساسية – فانتخابات الكونغرس في منتصف العهد جرت في الشهر الماضي. ولم يقل الرئيس بوش شيئًا لانتقاد تصريحات فالول وروبرتسون أو وصفها منذ انعقاد الانتخابات التي شهدت انتخاب ممثلين يمينيين عن الطائفة الإنجيلية في الكونغرس.
"بالله God نؤمن لكن الله Allah لسنا متأكدين منه".
في 6 تشرين الأول (أكتوبر)، توجّه الرئيس بوش إلى اجتماع للتحالف المسيحي اليميني المتطرّف في واشنطن بواسطة الاتصال عبر الفيديو فأربك بصورة خطرة الخطوط المقسّمة بين الكنيسة والدولة وأرسل أيضًا رسالة غامضة ومربكة حول نظرة إدارته الخاصة بالعلاقات ما بين الأديان وحقوق المسلمين الأميركيين بالعيش من دون خوف وضرر وقمع، وكذلك مواقف الحكومة الأميركية حيال العالم العربي الإسلامي بعامّة والنزاع الفلسطيني الإسرائيلي بصورة خاصة. وقد شهدت الأشهر الثلاثة الماضية تطوّرات مقلقة أخرى: إطلاق موقع الإنترنيت CampusWatch على يد الدكتور دانيال بايبس والدكتور مارتن كريمر، وهما مدافعان علنيّان عن أسوأ تجاوزات الحكومة والجيش الإسرائيليين، كما أنّهما مفكّران يمينيّان ذَوَا نفوذ ويحظيان باهتمام وانتباه كبار صانعي السياسات في إدارة بوش، ولا سيما المدير الجديد لشؤون الشرق الأوسط في مجلس الأمن القومي السيد إليوت أبرامز. وشاب سجلّ أبرامز السابق في الخدمة العامة كثير من الاتهامات التي أثبتت بسهولة بأنه كذب على الكونغرس لكي يدفع بفضيحة إيران والكونترا الغريبة في عهد ريغن. في مؤتمر أخير في واشنطن وبصفته رئيسًا للجنة الأميركية حول الحرية الدينية الدولية كان دور أبرامز أساسيًا في تحويل اتجاه اللجنة صوب البلدان المسلمة، فيما طمس تقريرًا دقيقًا أصدره فريق متعدد الطوائف من مستقي الوقائع عن الظروف في إسرائيل والأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة. ومن الواضح أكثر فأكثر أن الإدارة الأميركية الحالية، وخاصة فرعها الخاص بصنع السياسة الخارجية لا تحبّذ الممارسات العادلة أو مجالاً متوازنًا. فالعرب والمسلمون هم العدو الجديد في عاصمة يجدها الكثيرون مطبوعة بذكرى حقبة ماكّرثي. وجزئيًا ردًّا على مخاوف يمكن تفهّمها إثر أحداث 11 أيلول، ولكن ربما أكثر كمحاولة للمكوث في الحكم عبر تكتيكات ديماغوجية، يبدو أن إدارة بوش ومؤيّديهم في وسائل الإعلام الأساسية يجدون المسلمين العرب موضع شكّ ومذنبين حتى إثبات براءتهم، ورمزًا لكلّ ما يجب أن يخاف منه المواطنون في الولايات المتحدة ويراقبه ويعتبره مختلفًا كلّيًا وآخَرَ وغير مقترن بالقيم "اليهودية المسيحية" التي تتحلىّ بها السياسة والمجتمع في الولايات المتحدة.
وكثيرون من العاملين في إدارة بوش يحدّدون أنفسهم كمحافظين جدد يعتبرون في السجلّ العام مؤيّدين متشدّدين لإسرائيل وخاصة لحزب الليكود وأهدافه القصوى للحصول على أكبر قدر من الأراضي والمياه والموارد من فلسطين مع خفض عدد غير اليهوديين في تلك الأراضي بأي وسيلة ممكنة. وإن قاعدتهم الانتخابية تتألف أساسًا من صهاينة إنجيليين مسيحيين الذين يعتمدون تفسيرًا حرفيًا جدًّا للعهد القديم والعهد الجديد. وإن هذا الميل اللاهوتي في مجتمع الولايات المتحدة لطالما نظر نظرة تعاطف إلى إسرائيل إذ رأى تأسيسها في العام 1948 كتحقيق لنبوءة التوراة ومؤشر لنهاية العالم.
المؤمنون الحقيقيون مقتنعون بأن نهاية العالم قريبة، وبأن الحرب العتيدة في العراق هي الحرب التي جرى التنبّؤ بها في الكتاب المقدس وهي الحرب "على فاسقة بابل"، وهم يعتقدون فعلاً أنّه عندَ مجيء نهاية العالم سيصعدون مباشرة إلى الجنّة ويعتنق اليهود جميعًا المسيحية أو يهلكون في نيران جهنّم، أمّا المسلمون فسوف يهلكون في جهنّم نهاية العالم. يبدو أن هؤلاء المسيحيين لا يفهمون أن إلههم وإله المسلمين واحد. ويظنّ الكثيرون منهم أنّ المسلمين يعبدون النبي محمد (صلعم). وما يدعو للسخرية أن هذا الشعور الداخلي من الأصولية المسيحية الأميركية يوازي ويعكس في آن أسوأ أنواع التجاوزات والفكر السام الذي ترتكز عليه مجموعات كالقاعدة. وبالفعل يتضمن الكتاب الشهير لطارق علي بعنوان صراع الأصوليات اعترافًا وتحليلا لنقاط المقارنة الغريبة القائمة بين الخطاب والترشيد السياسي والنظرة العالمية للتعبيرات الشوفينية الإنجيلية الأكثر تشدداً لإدارة بوش من جهة، والتشتت الذي يرتبط بأسامة بن لادن. وبالفعل فقد صوّر طارق علي الرئيس بوش على غلاف كتابه ملتحياً ومرتدياً عمامة الطالبان، بينما صور بن لادن على غلاف الكتاب الخلفي من دون لفافة ومرتديا بزة زرقاء وربطة عنق حمراء كالتي يرتديها الرئيس بوش في حفلات التوقيع وهو يعقد مؤتمراً صحافياً في البيت الأبيض. إن هاتين الصورتين كان يمكنهما أن تكونا طريفتين لولا أنهما مثيرتان للرعب.
وفي أعقاب فظائع أحداث الحادي عشر من أيلول وكنتيجة للخوف والضرر والهستيريا الفعلية والمصطنعة التي تصدرت النشرات الأخبارية منذ ذلك التاريخ، اكتسب هؤلاء الأصوليون المسيحيون والمسلمون على حد سواء قوة ووجوداً على الساحتين المحلية والدولية أكثر من أي وقت مضى. وحصل كل ذلك على حساب الديمقراطية والحوار والتسامح وحقوق الإنسان. ولعل أفضل من يؤكد ذلك أولئك الأميركيون العرب والمسلمون الذين تعرضوا لشتى أنواع التحقيقات الخاصة وتفتيش منازلهم والتوقيفات والاعتقالات من دون محاكمة، وغالباً في حبس انفرادي من دون الحديث عن التصريحات العامة التي أدلى بها أشخاص نافذون من أصحاب السلطة يبررون ويشرعون فيها المعاملة التعسفية وغير العادلة تجاه المسلمين منذ أيلول 2001.
وفي فترة عيد الميلاد الماضي ركزت أكثر الكتب مبيعا على أحد الموضوعين التاليين: الإسلام والأسلحة الكيميائية والبيولوجية. أما هذا العام، فإذا راجعنا على موقع الإنترنت الشهير Amazon.com واذا نظرنا من لائحة الكتب الأكثر مبيعاً مستخدمين عبارة "إسلام" لوجدنا كتبا ككتاب بعنوان الجهاد الأميركي: التهديد المسلم للولايات المتحدة للكاتب ستيفن ايميرسون، وكتاب بعنوان وجها الإسلام: بيت سعود من التقليد إلى الرعب للكاتب ستيفن شوارتز، وكتاب ما الخطب؟: الصراع بين الإسلام والحداثة في الشرق الأوسط للكاتب برنارد لويس، والإسلام وأهل الذمة:حيث تصطدم الحضارات للكاتب بات يئور، بالإضافة إلى كتابي فؤاد عجمي ودانيال بايبس. أما الترجمات إلى الإنكليزية او أي تعليقات على القرآن او حديث النبي محمد (صلعم) فلا وجود لها إطلاقا في لائحة الكتب العشرة الاوائل الأكثر مبيعاً في هاتين المجموعتين.
إنّ أي باحث يستعمل الكلمات المفاتيح نفسها على موقع google.com محرّك البحث الأكثر شعبية على الإنترنت، فهو يحوي على أكثر من 4 ملايين موقع ممكن. المواقع العشرون الأساسية هي مجموعات أخبار ومواقع إنترنت للمسلمين ومن المسلمين وليست مواقع تحاول تقديم الإسلام أوشرحه أو تفسيره إلى غير المسلمين. تلك ليست مواقع حوار مع أن غير المسلمين يمكنهم أن يزوروها ويزورونها فعلاً ليروا ما يقال ويناقش فيها. ومعروف أن الإف.بي.آي والسي.آي.إي يراقبان كلّ ما يقال ويُنقَل هناك في حملة الدفاع عن الوطن لتحديد كلّ مصادر الإرهاب والأعمال المعادية لأميركا، الممكنة، ونزع جذورها.
ولدينا بشرى على صعيد السّواد الأعظم.
إذا انتقلنا من النظرة الكلّية للإنترنت ومبيعات وتسويق الكتاب على صعيد الأمة والتلفزيون المحلي الوحيد الاتجاه إلى مستوى السواد الأعظم، نجد عناصر كثيرة توحي بالأمل: حوار متزايد ما بين الأديان بين المسيحيين والمسلمين واليهود؛ الكنائس المسيحية التي استجابت بشجاعة ورحمة لتقارير لنساء مسلمات تعرّضن للتحرّش لارتدائهنّ الحجاب. وقرّرت نساء مسيحيات كثيرات أن يرتدين هنّ أيضًا الحجاب تعبيرًا عن تضامنهنّ مع أخواتهنّ المسلمات وتعاطفهنّ معهنّ. وبالإضافة إلى المعارض الفنّية، والعروض في الصفوف، وعروض الأفلام الخاصة، والمحاضرات العامة عبر الولايات المتحدة وكندا التي حملت الرسالة وهي رسالة الإمام موسى الصدر القائلة بأن الحقد، وعدم التسامح، والتنميطات، والخوف هي ردود غير ملائمة في زمن الأزمات والمخاطر. وإن كان من الضروري أن تحصل الحوارات بين الحضارات فهي تحصل عندما يتواجه شخصان ويتشاطران أفكارهما وآمالهما ومخاوفهما وتطلّعاتهما. فهذا أمر يحصل فعلاً عبر الولايات المتحدة وكندا مع أنّه لا يعبّر عنه غالبًا في النشرات الأخبارية الموجَّهة.
وحتى على شاشات التلفزيون، يجب أن نقرّ بالمعروف حيثما يجب. خصَّصت معظم شبكات الأخبار الكبرى برامج خاصة بشهر رمضان، والنبي محمد (صلعم)، والإسلام منذ أحداث أيلول. ومعظم هذه الإنتاجات على درجة عالية من الاحتراف والعرض، وهي معبّرة عن الوقائع ومثيرة للاهتمام ومفيدة بالمعلومات. كما أن CNN, BBC, MSNBC, PBS, NBC, CBC وشبكات إعلامية أخرى تعرض أيضا صفحات خاصة تفاعلية على مواقعها على الإنترنت لتعريف المواطن العادي غير المسلم من شمال أمريكا على الإسلام وتاريخه وتعاليمه ومبادئه والمؤمنين والتقاليد.
ومع ان هذا التوجه مرحب به وقد بدد الكثير من الأنماط الموحدة والأكاذيب والتشهير وسوء الفهم حول الإسلام والمسلمين إلا انه يطرح إشكالية في إطار تغطية الأخبار الدولية. فعندما تقوم قوات الدفاع الإسرائيلية بقصف مبنى في غزة ويقتل مئات الضحايا منتهكة بذلك القانون الإنساني الدولي والقوانين الأميركية التي تنص على الاستخدام المقبول لهباتها في مجال المساعدة العسكرية، لا تقوم أي شبكة تلفزيونية أو أي مجلة إخبارية بتحضير مقاطع خاصة من الأخبار حول تاريخ اليهودية او المعتقدات اليهودية رداً على هذه الأفعال الإجرامية. كل ما يقدم كخلفية، هو عادة تاريخ إسرائيل التي تصور على أنها دولة صغيرة شجاعة يقطنها ناجون أقوياء يتحّدون كل الصعاب في إطار مواجهتهم العدائية غير المعقولة والشريرة أحياناً من قبل جيرانهم، من أجل التمكن من العيش في الأرض المقدسة. إذاً، منذ البداية تختلف الروايات وأهم من ذلك هو السياق الذي تندرج ضمنه هذه الروايات. فالأفعال العربية والمسلمة تفسر ضمن نظرة شاملة وكاسحة للإسلام كديانة عالمية. أما الأفعال الإسرائيلية فينظر إليها ضمن سياق أكثر تخصصا (بمساعدة كبيرة من عدد من وسائل الإعلام التي أثيرت عاطفتها) - في إطار تاريخي خاص ولكن مشوّه سياسيًا: إذاً، هذا الاطار هو إطار تاريخي، وهو إطار السنوات الستين الأخيرة من القرن العشرين. أما البرامج التلفزيونية، والأفلام الوثائقية، والصحف، ومواقع الإنترنيت التي تحاول أن تضع أعمال العرب والمسلمين ومعتقداتهم وهمومهم وأهدافهم في النوع نفسه من الإطار السياسي والأخلاقي والتاريخي فهي ليست معروفة جدًا. وإن عروضًا كهذه تتطلب تحليلاً أعمق وأكثر دقةً للتاريخ السياسي في فترة ما بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية، بما في ذلك احتساب دقيق للسياسة الأميركية الخارجية وكيف توضَع وتُنَفَّذ وأيّ آثار لها. ومنذ 11 أيلول، لا تحظى التقارير الانتقادية، والعميقة والصارمة بأي تشجيع أو ترحيب في وسائل الإعلام الموجَّهة في الولايات المتحدة. ومن يحاول ذلك يعتبر عديم الوطنية.
الإرهاب واستخداماته في "صدام الأصوليات"
قدّمت التراكمات الإحصائية السنوية التي أصدرتها الحكومة الأميركية حول الإرهاب الدولي لسنوات صورةً مختلفة جدًا عن تلك التي نراها في أخبار التلفزيون أو على شاشات السينما. وبعكس الاعتقاد الشعبي السائد، حصل معظم الإرهاب الدولي لسنوات عدة وهو محدَّد كهجومات أو تهديدات أو اعتداءات على المدنيين من أجل تحقيق أهداف سياسية، في مواقع كأميركا الوسطى والجنوبية وسريلانكا وأوروبا الغربية وأفريقيا. ولم تحتلّ الأعمال الإرهابية الشرق أوسطية أو الإسلامية المراتب الأولى إلاّ في العام 2001. إلاّ أن معظم الأميركيين ينسبون كلمة "إرهاب" للعرب والإسلام. فعندما يعلّم زوجي السياسة الشرق أوسطية يسأل طلاّبه أن يقولوا بصراحة وعفوية ما يرد إلى ذهنهم عندما يقول "إسلام" أو "عرب". ومع أنّ بعض الطلاّب يعطون أجوبة حيادية يقول عدد أكبر منهم "إرهاب" أو "جهاد" أو "كره الولايات المتحدة" و"الأصولية". وكما أشار جاك شاهين في كتابه المليارديريون والمقاتلات والراقصات الشرقيات، إن آراء الأميركيين عن العالمين العربي والإسلامي تصقلها بدقة ولكن بالتأكيد سلسلة من وسائل الإعلام: الكتب الساخرة، والأفلام، والموسيقى، والخيال، والمسلسلات، والبرامج الهزلية، والجمعيات الضمنية التي تدعوها وسائل الإعلام الموجَّهة. ويراود ذهني مثل أخير: ورد في الغلوب أند مايل Globe and Mail في تورونتو الأسبوع الماضي خبر عن فضيحة تشيري بلير زوجة رئيس الوزراء البريطاني طوني بلير متورّطة فيها لشرائها عقارات من مجرم وغشّاش أسترالي تعرّفت عليه بواسطة صديقتها الجديدة راقصة التعري السابقة التي تحوّلت إلى مستشارة. وقد تعرّضت السيدة بلير للانتقاد اللاذع بسبب انعدام حسّ الحكم لديها مع أنّها خبيرة قانونية محترمة ومتعلمة. وإذ حاولت المقالة أن تجد سلسلة من الزلاّت والتفكير الأخلاقي السيّئ، انتهت بتذكير بأن السيدة بلير عبّرت عن تعاطف في نيسان الماضي مع الفلسطينيين في ما أعربت عن انذهالها من سلوك الحكومة الإسرائيلية حتى انها قالت إن الناس سيستمرّون في القيام بعمليات تفجير انتحارية إلاّ إذا نالوا الأمل والكرامة. وقد انتُقدت على الفور على هذا التصريح العام، وقد شُجب تعليقها العلني هذا على الفور في ذاك الوقت، كما أن المقالة الصحافية حول هفواتها المالية انتهت بالتعبير عن أمل لحكمها العقلي وطباعها مع الإشارة إلى أنّها ربما قد أنكرت علنًا تعليقها.
عمليات اختطاف أخرى غير الظاهرة
أصبح من الواضح خلال العام المنصرم ان ما اختطف في الولايات المتحدة هو اكثر بكثير من أربع طائرات في أيلول 2001. فالأميركيون العرب والأميركيون المسلمون هم أفضل من يعرف ذلك. وما زالت حالات اختطاف أخرى تحصل بشكل دائم، وقد تضاهي بخطورتها وضررها عمليات الاختطاف التي قام بها 19 شاباً عربياً في أيلول الماضي. أما الوسائل المستخدمة في عمليات الاختطاف الفادحة هذه فهي أكثر تطوراً والتواء من قواطع الورق مثلا. ولكن بما ان عمليات الاختطاف هذه مستمرة ولم تنكشف نتائجها بعد، لسوء حظ الملايين، إلا أننا قد نكون امام فرصة تخوّلنا استعادة السيطرة من بين أيدي الخاطفين وتغيير مسار الأمور.
لقد حصلت عملية الاختطاف الأولى قبل قرابة العام من تاريخ الحادي عشر من أيلول وذلك خلال الانتخابات الأخيرة. فالعملية الانتخابية، ولا سيما بالنسبة إلى صناديق الاقتراع، قد أديرت بأساليب متخلفة في فلوريدا حيث حصل باتريك بيوكانان على رقم مفاجئ من أصوات الناخبين اليهود بينما أبعد الأميركيون الأفارقة عن مراكز الاقتراع بأعداد مرتفعة ومريبة. الا أن عملية الاختطاف الانتخابي لم تتجل بكل فظاعتها والتوائها الفريدين الا في واشنطن، حيث حكمت محكمة عليا مشكوك بحيادها بنتيجة الانتخابات وأعلنت الفائز. (بما ان الخيار كان بين المرشحين الرائدين اللذين يطلق عليهما مزاحاً اسما غاش وبور بمعنى واضح يتفجّر ويمل وهذا خيار لا يفسح مجالاً كبيراً للتحسر، لذلك يمكن القول إن العملية الانتخابية قد اختطفت قبل انتخابات العام 2000 بأشهر إن لم نقل بسنين).
وبعد اتمام عملية الاختطاف هذه –والمفاجأة هي انها لم تثر الكثير من الاعتراضات او الشكاوى من قبل ركاب الطائرة الكبرى أميركا- قامت الإدارة الأميركية الجديدة بسلسلة من عمليات الاختطاف انطلاقا من هاجسها المتمثل بنظرة غير واقعية وأحادية الأطراف حول العالم ومكانة أميركا فيه. وبالفعل فالعمليات الدولية أطر مواجهة أزمات كارتفاع حرارة الأرض وسباق التسلح وحقوق العدالة الدولية قد اختطفت وشتتت من قبل القوة العظيمة الوحيدة في العالم إذ أنكرت بروتوكول كيوتو ألغت المعاهدة حول الصواريخ المضادة للصواريخ البالستية وانسحبت من معاهدة روما التي أرست أسس المحكمة الجنائية الدولية.
وبصورة منحرفة وبفخر ومن دون حياء، قدمت الولايات المتحدة عن نفسها صورة مشاكسة إلى العالم وهي صورة المناظر المتعجرف وغير المكترث بإرادة الشعب أكان أميركيًا أو من مواطني عالم يزداد ترابطه. "ما نقوله يسري! إعبثوا معنا فنعبث معكم. نحن الأوائل!"
لم يكن لأحداث11 أيلول الرهيبة إلا أن تزيد من حدة ذاك الميل في السياسة الأميركية على الصعيدين المحلي والدولي. كما أن حلفاء الولايات المتحدة القديمين والجدد حذوا حذو الرئيس بوش، وزير الدفاع رامسفلد، المدّعي أشكروفت وعضوا مجلس الشيوخ جيسي هلمس وديك أرمي بأن حقوق الإنسان، وسيادة القانون، والديمقراطية، واتفاقيات جينيف، واحترام الأقليات، والعملية القانونية والمبادئ العادلة يمكن نبذها والتخلّي عنها وسحقها حتى بخوف اقلّ من العواقب الطويلة الأمد مما كانت عليه الحال قبل 11 أيلول. بالتالي، نالت السياسات والممارسات الفاشيّة مساعدة ودعمًا في إسرائيل وباكستان وأوزبكستان وروسيا وغيرها من أماكن كثيرة تلقّى فيها القانون الإنساني الدولي مؤخرًا ضربة قاسية. فمجرمو الحرب يرحّب بهم بحرارة في البيت الأبيض كرجال سلام؛ وصفقات الأسلحة تعقد مع أنظمة أيديها ملطّخة بالدماء وكلّ هذا يعتبر انتهاكًا للقوانين الأميركية كقانون المساعدة الخارجية الصادر في العام 1961. وهو الذي يمنع الولايات المتحدة من تقديم اي مساعدة عسكرية لأي دولة تنتهك حقوق الإنسان.
والأكثر إحباطًا في الامر هو أن الأمم المتحدة سمحت لنفسها بالتعرّض للاختطاف للاستجابة لرغبات الأقوياء بدلاً من صون حاجات الضعفاء. من منّا ما زال مؤمنًا بقدرة تلك الهيئة العالمية على التوسّط في النزاعات، ووقف سفك الدماء، وتنفيذ إرادة الأسرة الدولية، ودعم ما هو عادل ومناسب، أو اتخاذ موقف مساند للقانون الدولي بعد انهيار الأمم المتحدة أمام رفض إسرائيل السماح بالتحقيقات بشأن أحداث جنين في نيسان (أبريل) الماضي؟

من أجل حقوق الإنسان، والديمقراطية، والكرامة، والسلام، والحضارة، من الضروري أن يسعى المسيحيون والمسلمون الذين يخشون التحول الأصولي في قيادتهم ومنهج طوائفهم، عبر الارتباك، والحقد، والخوف، والتعجرف، إلى التقدّم والمحافظة على حوار حضارات، لا صراع أصوليات.

Faiths strive for one objective: War against the self-appointed gods of earth and tyrants and support for the oppressed and the unjustly treated, which are two versions of a single reality. Faiths achieved victory and the oppressed became triumphant, only to be shocked by the fact that tyrants have ruled in the name of faiths. This increases the chaos for the oppressed and widens the gap, which begins religions’ chaos. It is a fact that when interests are jeopardized, differences will occur.

As soon as we learned that jetliners had crashed into the Twin Towers in Manhattan and the Pentagon in Washington last year, my husband and I felt a chill of fear and foreboding sweep over us. “God help us if this is from the Middle East!” he said. More than a year later, we are still worried about the implications and repercussions of the tragic events of September 11th on the Middle East, the noble religion of Islam—a religion of justice and compassion; our friends and family in Lebanon, Palestine and elsewhere; and our Arab American and Muslim friends and colleagues in the United States.
Although Muslim leaders throughout the United States immediately condemned the attacks of September 11th unequivocally, and despite President George W. Bush’s initial sensible and responsible pleas to all Americans not to judge their Muslim neighbors negatively in the aftermath of the attacks, the Dialogue of Civilizations—Islamic and Christian, Arab and American--has been put to some rigorous tests over the last year, and often found weak and fragile. In the last six months, President Bush and many of his closest advisors have been increasingly perceived as becoming closer to, and in accord with, Christian Fundamentalist Zionists. Perhaps Washington’s silence in the face of this voting bloc’s rhetorical excesses (characterized by the Reverend Pat Robertson’s and the Reverend Jerry Falwell’s accusations that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was “the original terrorist,” and the Islam is a religion of hate and violence) stemmed from the political necessities of a key election year—the mid-term congressional elections took place last month. But even since the elections, which saw more right-wing representatives of the Evangelical cast of mind winning seats in Congress, President Bush has not said anything to criticize or qualify the statements of Falwell and Robertson. =
= “In God we Trust”—But Allah we’re not so sure about
On October 6th, President Bush addressed a meeting of the extreme right wing Christian Coalition by video link-up in Washington, DC, dangerously blurring the dividing lines between Church and State and also sending an ambiguous and disturbing message about his Administration’s views on inter-faith relations, the rights of American Muslim citizens to live free from fear, prejudice, and oppression; and the US Government’s stances toward the Arab Islamic world in general and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in particular. The past three months have witnessed other worrisome developments: The launch of the CampusWatch website by Drs. Daniel Pipes and Martin Kramer, who are vocal apologists for the worst excesses of the Israeli government and army as well as being influential right-wing intellectuals who have the ear and attention of key policy makers in the Bush Administration, notably the new Director of Middle East Affairs in the National Security Council: Mr. Elliott Abrams. Abrams’ past record of public service was besmirched with charges, easily proved, that he lied to Congress in order to push through the bizarre Iran-Contra scandal of the Reagan years. In a recent Washington posting, as Chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, Mr. Abrams was instrumental in directing the Commissions attention overwhelmingly to Muslim countries while quashing a critical report about conditions in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories submitted by an interdenominational team of fact-finders.
It is clearer and clearer that the current US administration, particularly its foreign-policy making branch, is not in favor of fair practices or a level playing field. Arabs and Muslims are the new enemy in a national capital that many find reminiscent of the dark days of the McCarthy Era. Partly in response to understandable fears following the September 11th attacks, but perhaps more so as a crude attempt to stay in power through demagogic tactics, the Bush Administration and their cheerleaders in the mainstream media seem to find Muslims and Arabs suspicious, guilty until proven innocent, and the symbol of all that citizens of the US should fear, monitor, and consider utterly different, other, and incommensurable with the supposed “Judeo-Christian” values of US society and politics.
Many of the key personnel in the Bush Administration are self-identified neo-conservatives who are unabashedly on the public record as stalwart supporters of Israel, particularly the Likud Party and its maximalist aims of obtaining as much land, water, and resources from Palestine as possible while diminishing the numbers of non-Jews on that land by whatever means necessary. Their support base in the US electorate consists primarily of Christian Evangelical Zionists who subscribe to a very literal interpretation of the Old and New Testaments. This theological tendency in US society has always had a special regard for Israel, viewing its founding in 1948 as fulfillment of biblical prophesy and as a harbinger of the End Times and Armageddon. =
=True believers are convinced that the End Time is near, that the coming war in Iraq is the biblically prophesized war against the “Whore of Babylon,” and they have utter faith that when Armageddon comes, they will be directly raptured into heaven, all Jews will be converted to Christianity or perish in the fires, and as for Muslims, they will of course perish in Armageddon. Such Christians do not seem to know or understand that their God and Allah are one and the same God. Many seem to think that Muslims worship The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Ironically, this homegrown strain of American Christian fundamentalism parallels and mirrors the worst excesses and toxic thinking of groups like Al-Qaida. Indeed, a best-selling book, Tariq Ali’s “Clash of Fundamentalisms” recognizes this fact and analyzes the eerie parallels in rhetoric, political rationalizations, and world views between the Bush Administration’s most hard-line, evangelically tinged, jingoistic pronouncements and the ravings of Osama Bin Ladin. In fact, the cover of Ali’s book depicts a bearded George W. Bush wearing a Talibanesque turban. The back cover shows Osama Bin Ladin, minus his turban, wearing one of President Bush’s signature blue suit and red necktie ensembles giving a press conference at the White House. These images would be amusing if they were not so frightening. =
=In the wake of the horrors of September 11, and as a result of the actual and manufactured fear, prejudice and hysteria that has been a daily staple of mainstream newsreporting ever since, such fundamentalists—Christian as well as Muslim--have more power and presence on the national and international political stage than ever before. Democracy, dialogue, tolerance, and human rights are the poorer for it. And no one knows this better than American Arabs and Muslims, who have been targeted for special investigations, house searches, arrests and detention without trial, often being held in solitary confinement, not to mention public statements made by powerful and influential people justifying and legitimating the unjust and abusive treatment Muslims have had to suffer since September 2001.
Last Christmas, the best-selling books focused on one of two topics: Islam and Chemical and Biological Weapons. This year, a search of best-selling book titles on the popular Amazon.com on-line bookstore using the key word “Islam” brings up books such as “American Jihad: The Muslim Threat to the US,” by Stephen Emerson, The Two Faces of Islam: The House of Sa'ud from Tradition to Terror, by Stephen Schwarz and What Went Wrong?: The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East by Bernard Lewis, and Islam and Dhimmitude: Where Civilizations Collide, by Bat Yeor, As well as Fouad Ajami’s and Daniel Pipe’s books. English translations or commentaries upon the Qur’an or the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) do not appear in the top-ten best sellers under these categories.
A search using the same key words on google.com, the most popular search engine on the Internet, brings up over 4 million possible sites. The top 20 sites are newsgroups and websites for and by Muslims, not sites that attempt to introduce, explain, or interpret Islam to non-Muslims. These are not dialogue sites, though non-Muslims can and do visit to see what is being said and discussed there. And it is a given that the FBI and CIA are monitoring all that is said and transmitted there in the Homeland Defense campaign to identify and root out all possible sources of terrorism and anti-American acts.
Good News at the Grassroots
Moving from the macro perspective of the Internet, nationwide book marketing and sales and mainstream national television to the local grassroots level, there is much to inspire hope: increased interfaith dialogue between Christians, Muslims, and Jews; Christian churches that responded bravely and compassionately to reports of Muslim women being harassed for wearing hijab. Many Christian women decided that they, too, would wear hijab to show solidarity with and concern for their Muslim sisters. Art exhibits, classroom presentations, special film showings, and public lectures across the US and Canada have carried the message that hate, intolerance, stereotypes and fear are improper responses at a time of crisis and danger. If dialogues between civilizations are to take place, they will only happen when two people face one another and share their thoughts, hopes, fears, and perspectives. Though not often reported in the mainstream news, this is indeed happening across the US and Canada. =
=And even on television, credit must be given where it is due. All of the major news networks have run special features about Ramadan, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and Islam since the events of last September. Most of these productions are highly professional, well presented, factual, interesting, and informative. CNN, BBC, MSNBC, PBS, NBC, CBC, and other media outlets also feature special interactive pages on their websites to help the average non-Muslim North American learn more about Islam, its history, tenets, principles, believers, and traditions.
Although this trend is to be commended, and has probably done a lot to dispel stereotypes, lies, slander, and misunderstandings about Islam and Muslims, it is problematic in the context of international news reporting. When the Israeli Defense Forces bomb an apartment building in Gaza, in clear contravention of international humanitarian law, not to mention US laws stipulating the acceptable use of its military aid donations, no television network or news magazine prepares special segments of the news on the history of Judaism or Jewish beliefs in response to such criminal actions. If any background is provided at all, it is usually that of the history of Israel, presented as a gutsy, small state of tough survivors, struggling against all odds as they confront the irrational, possibly evil, hostility of their neighbors and attempt to eke out a living in the Holy Land. So, from the outset, the narratives--and more importantly, the contextualization of narratives--are different: Arab and Muslim actions are interpreted within a rather general and sweeping overview of Islam as a world religion. Israeli actions are contextualized with greater specificity (though with a large helping of sentimentalized media spin) within a particular though politically slanted historical context: that of the last sixty years the 20th century. Television programs, documentaries, newspaper features, and websites that attempt to place Arab and Muslim actions, beliefs, concerns, and goals in the same sort of specific historical, political, and moral context are not very common. Such presentations would require a deeper and more critical analysis of political history in the post- WWII era, including a rigorous accounting of US foreign policy, how it is shaped, executed, and what sorts of repercussions it has have. Since September 11, such critical, thoughtful, and rigorous reporting is not encouraged or welcomed in the mainstream US media. Those who attempt it are considered lacking in patriotism.
Terror and its Rhetorical Uses in the “Clash of Fundamentalisms” Annual statistical compilations by the US government about international terrorism for years presented a very different picture than that visible on television news or cinema screens. Contrary to popular belief, for years most international terrorism, defined as attacks or threats of attacks on civilians in order to accomplish political goals, took place in such locales as Central and South America, Sri Lanka, Western Europe, and Africa. Middle Eastern or Islamic acts of terror have never been in the top ten until 2001. Yet most Americans associate “terror” with Arabs and Islam. When my husband has taught Middle East Politics courses, he asks his students to honestly and= =spontaneously say whatever comes into their mind when he says “Islam” and “Arabs.” Though some students give neutral answers, many more say “terror,” “jihad,” “hatred of the US,” and “fundamentalism”. As Jack Shaheen noted in his book, “Billionaires, Bombers and Bellydancers,” Americans’ views of the Arab and Islamic worlds are shaped subtlety but surely by a variety of media: comic books, feature films, music, fiction, soap operas, comedy programs, and the innuendo and implicit associations conveyed by mainstream news media. A recent example springs to mind: The Toronto Globe and Mail reported last week on a scandal involving Cherie Blair, wife of British PM Tony Blair, buying real estate from a convicted Australian felon and con-artist, whom she met through her new best friend, a former topless dancer-turned-lifestyle consultant. Mrs. Blair, though a respected and highly educated legal expert in Britain, was critiqued harshly for her lapse in judgment. In attempting to find a pattern of missteps and poor moral reasoning, the article concluded with a reminder that Mrs. Blair had expressed sympathy last April for the Palestinians, while voicing dismay with the Israeli government, going so far as to say that, unless people have hope and dignity, they will continue to conduct suicide bombings. She was immediately excoriated for this public comment at the time, and the newspaper article about her financial peccadilloes concluded with hope for her moral judgment and character by noting that she had eventually recanted her comment.
More hijackings than meet the eye
Over the last 12 months, it has become increasingly clear that much more has been hijacked in the US than four doomed airliners on September 11, 2001. No one knows this better than American Arabs and American Muslims. Other hijackings are still in progress, and may prove to be just as dangerous and nefarious as those perpetrated by 19 young Arab men last September. The tools used to perpetrate these less high-profile hijackings are more sophisticated and devious than box-cutters, though. But since these hijackings are still in progress, and their denouement has yet to unfold, to the detriment of millions, we may yet have a chance to take back control from the hijackers and chart a new course.=
=The first hijacking began nearly a year before 9/11, during the last presidential elections. The electoral process was commandeered at the polls by old-fashioned means in Florida, where Patrick Buchanan picked up a surprising number of Jewish votes and African Americans were turned away from polling places in suspiciously high numbers. But the unique horror and deviousness of this electoral hijacking only became fully apparent in Washington, where a Supreme Court of dubious impartiality decided who won the election. (And given that the choice between the two leading candidates, whom some jokingly dubbed “Gush and Bore”, left much to be desired, it’s easy to argue that the electoral process was hijacked months if not years before election day 2000.)
That hijacking easily accomplished--and with surprisingly few protests or complaints from the passengers of the wayward airliner America had become--a whole series of other hijackings were undertaken by a new US administration obsessed with an unrealistically unilateralist view of the world and America’s place in it. International processes and frameworks addressing crises such as global warming, the arms race, and international justice rights were hijacked and virtually dismantled by the world’s sole superpower, as the US repudiated the Kyoto Protocols, cancelled the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and withdrew from the Rome Treaty establishing an International Criminal Court.
Perversely, proudly and shamelessly, the US has presented a new and pugnacious face to the world, that of an arrogant taskmaster and bully uninterested in the will of the people, be they American citizens or citizens of an increasingly interdependent world. “What we say goes. Mess with us and we’ll mess with you. We’re number one!”
The harrowing events of 9/11 only exacerbated this ugly tendency in American politics, domestically and internationally. US allies, old and new, have taken their cue from President Bush, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, Attorney General Ashcroft and Senators Jesse Helms and Dick Armey that human rights, the rule of law, democracy, the Geneva Conventions, respect for minorities, due process, and just principles can be jettisoned, disregarded, and trampled with even less fear of long-term consequences than before 9/11. Thus, fascistic policies and practices have been aided and abetted in Israel, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Russia, to name just a few places where international humanitarian law has recently taken a serious beating. War criminals are warmly welcomed in the White House as men of peace; arms deals are clinched with regimes whose hands are soaked in blood, all in contravention of US laws, such as the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.
Even more distressing, the UN has allowed itself to be hijacked to suit the wishes of the powerful rather than safeguarding the needs of the powerless. Who still has faith in that world body’s ability to mediate conflicts, halt bloodshed, enforce the will of the international community, speak up for what is just and proper, or take a stand for international law after the UN’s cave-in to Israel’s refusal to allow any investigations of events in Jenin last April?
A full year after 19 misguided, hate-poisoned young Arab men hijacked the complex, subtle, and noble Islamic principle of jihad—which demands a spiritual battle with one’s own inner demons--to kill thousands of innocents, the democratic process, the rule of law, and respect for the principles of justice are still being commandeered daily—domestically and internationally—by much more sophisticated hijackers. They use media spin, lobbyists’ charm offensives, P.R. campaigns, fear and demagoguery to rob Americans of their critical thought and political will. They are taking America to destinations as yet unknown, most likely bleak. They are spiteful, angry, selfish, and lacking in maturity, wisdom, and common sense. These hijackers promise us a “war without end”—today in= =Afghanistan, tomorrow in Iraq, next year in Southeast Asia. They are about to launch a war without borders, goals, or resolution, a war guaranteed to produce only victims without names, more collateral damage, along with big profits for defense contractors.
Who are these hijackers? Do they truly represent the will of the people of the United States of America? Do they reflect the dearest goals, the noblest hopes, of 300 million American citizens? Probably no more than 19 deranged hijackers truly represented the ultimate desires of the vast majority of the world’s one billion Muslims last September 11th.
In the interests of human rights, democracy, dignity, peace and civilization, it is imperative that Christians and Muslims who fear the fundamentalist turn in the leadership and rhetoric of their faith communities reach out through the confusion, hatred, fear, and arrogance to advance and sustain a dialogue of civilizations, not a clash of fundamentalisms.
